Childhood Obesity

Community Benefit is overseeing a Childhood Obesity grant from the Duke Endowment to help improve the health of children living in Mecklenburg County. The purpose is to implement and track strategies from the “Blueprint for a Healthier Generation, 2020: Interventions for Supporting Healthy Eating and Promoting Active Living for Mecklenburg County Youth.” The grant will focus on coalition building, policy implementation, environmental changes, education, and evidence-based strategies for children and youth.

Healthy Together - Take the Pledge

Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s Hospital has launched Healthy Together, a community-wide awareness campaign to combat childhood obesity. We’re offering helpful resources, exciting activities and fun events to encourage healthy lifestyles for the whole family. And we’re challenging 10,000 local families to take part by pledging to be healthy together.

How can you get involved? Pledge to follow healthy habits with your family and join the 5-2-1-0 League.

Every day, follow 5-2-1-0 and aim to achieve:

  • 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
  • 2 hours or less of recreational screen time
  • 1 hour of activity
  • 0 sugary beverages

Mental Health First Aid

The National Council for Behavioral Health has spearheaded MHFA, an innovative public education model addressing pervasive and persistent challenges across America. This evidence-based, in-person training program was developed to teach individuals how to recognize and respond to the warning signs of mental health and substance abuse disorders while linking those who need help to treatment locations in the area. Please contact Corporate Community Benefit for more information at 704-631-1000.

Diabetes Prevention - Reverse the Risk

Atrium Health is partnering with YMCA of Greater Charlotte on the Pre-D Challenge to help reduce the prevalence of prediabetes in our region. Together, over the next year, we pledge to engage 50,000 adults to assess their risk for diabetes, with a goal of identifying 10,000 individuals across The System who are at higher risk and advising them on appropriate preventive services and/or treatment options.

Atrium Health teammates are encouraged to read the information on Pre-D Challenge: Reverse the Risk and Take the Test.
